God’s Gift Is Complete, Fear Is Not Included
I know it’s an unusual way to begin my post, but I have to say WOW!....looking at this scripture with a fresh perspective gave me a revelation. Examine this scripture with me …..2 Timothy 1:7 — "For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind." Let’s start with this truth: God has given us everything we need for life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him, who has called us to glory and goodness, by which we gain access to exceeding great and precious promises (2 Peter 1:2-4).
However please note, Fear, is not one of these gifts, see the evidence written in 2 Timothy 1:7 — "For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind." I repeated the scripture here for emphasis because it is crystal clear that fear does not come from God. It is an intruder, a spirit not of His making, and it has no place in the lives of believers.

Fear is a spirit. Merriam-Webster defines spirit as the non-physical part of humans that animates emotions, personality, and character. Just as the Holy Spirit animates us with God’s power and essence (John 6:63), the spirit of fear seeks to animate us with its own destructive characteristics. This foreign spirit drives anxiety, hesitation, confusion, and spiritual paralysis. But, praise God, we are equipped to discard fear and replace it with the gifts of power, love, and a sound mind that God has graciously bestowed upon us.
I'm so excited to share how I broke free from fear—and guess what? You can too! Together, let’s dive into the scripture-based strategies that helped me overcome fear and step boldly into the fullness of God’s promises. This could be the revelation you’ve been waiting for!
1. Recognize Fear’s Origin
Fear first appeared in Genesis 3:9-10, when Adam said, “I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; and I hid myself.” Prior to this moment, Adam and Eve enjoyed open fellowship with God. Let’s pause for a moment and really unpack this scene. This wasn’t the first time Adam heard God’s voice in the garden. They already had an intimate relationship—constant communion and conversation, as we see throughout Genesis chapters 1 and 2. Adam was always where he was supposed to be, fully aligned with God. Before this moment, God never had to ask, “Where are you?” And Adam never felt the need to hide nor communicate being afraid. But fear changed everything. It broke that alignment. It put Adam out of touch with God, destroyed his confidence, and filled him with worry and shame. Suddenly, he was afraid to be in God’s presence. Fear has a way of doing that—it creates distance, sows discord, and robs us of the peace and intimacy we’re meant to have with our Heavenly Father.

Let that sink in for a moment. Because when the dots connected for me, I fully realized how my relationship with God was affected, especially my prayer life. I experienced fear of death, fear of not going to heaven, fear of how illness would affect me, or fear of not being financially stable in my old age with such a potentially harsh economic climate...among so many other things. Can anyone relate to having these fears? In being hung up on these fears, there were times it was hard to pray which led to me being even more disconnected from God.
As we see for Adam, fear entered through disobedience, doubt, and deception—all brought about by the lies of Satan. That is where I made the connection and got the revelation, recognizing the origin of my fears. I was disobedient – in not believing and trusting the word of God, doubt took me over because I was more inclined to believe what I saw and heard from others rather than believing to see the power of God in my life. This led to me being deceived several times in my life, again, because I chose to listen to lies and be swayed by negative influences rather than godly council and God’s precious promises.
The scriptures show us clearly how we can progress to being in bondage and living in fear:
Doubt: Satan challenged God’s word, planting seeds of uncertainty (Genesis 3:1).
Deception: Adam and Eve accepted Satan’s lies, in which he mingled partial truths with falsehoods (Genesis 3:4).
Disobedience: Acting on this deception, they violated God’s command (Genesis 3:6).
Fear: Disobedience opened the door for fear to overwhelm them (Genesis 3:10).
It all boils down to this, fear is rooted in a lie. However, when we align with God’s truth, we close the door on fear. James 4:7 reminds us, “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” I encourage you to begin the process of breaking free from the bondage of fear by doing a deep dive to see the origins of fear in your life.

2. Acknowledge What God Has Given You
God has equipped us with power, love, and a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7). These are spiritual tools to combat fear. Once I acknowledged with confidence that I am powerful, God loves me, I can love others, and I can operate with a sound mind and self-control then I began to be less fearful. As I grew in confidence of what I possessed through Jesus Christ fear became a thing of the past.
Power
God is all-powerful (Psalm 147:5), and as His children, we are joint-heirs with Christ (Romans 8:16-17). Through the Holy Spirit, we are empowered to walk boldly, proclaim the gospel, and resist the enemy’s schemes (Acts 1:8; Luke 10:19). You too can activate this power through:
Prayer: Boldly approach God’s throne (Hebrews 4:16). Prayer releases energy and strength through the working of God in our lives and situations. The more we pray the more we are weaponized to fight against fear. God has given us the act of prayer as a tool to combat fear, so send up your prayers. Prayers do so much and then some! Read James 5:15.
The Word: Let scripture build your faith (Romans 10:17). The Word of God lights our path and is like a daily bread that nourishes us and sustain us (Deuteronomy 8:3, Jeremiah 15:16). The more you read the word of God and meditate on the promises, it’s the more you will be able to confidently declare that fear is replaced by faith. There is no safe harbor for fear when your faith rises up…..so use the Word to dispel all fear.
Spiritual Armor: Ensure your armor is intact (Ephesians 6:10-18). Your spiritual armor is like a blueprint that maps a trajectory for peace, love and confidence. Having weak links in this armor will almost certainly make you a prey to fear and be in bondage to anxiety, depression and despair. Having an intact armor gives you the confidence and power to break free of the stranglehold that fear has over you.
Love
God’s love is transformative. It drives out fear (1 John 4:18). When we are secure in His love, fear has no room to operate.

Abide in Love: Stay connected to God, who is love (1 John 4:16). God’s love is not fleeting or conditional, rather it is pure, unchanging, and boundless. Abiding in God’s perfect love displaces fear, so it stands to reason that love should saturate us through and through filling our lives completely. Friends, then and only then, can you break free of fearful thoughts and behaviors because God’s love is changing you. Its reshaping your relationships, influencing our decisions, and giving you confidence to be courageous in facing challenges. Abiding in God’s love gives you the strength to breakdown the strongholds that fear builds up.
· Show Love: Loving others is the evidence of Christ within us (John 13:34-35). When Christ lives in us, fear—whether of judgment, rejection, failure, or the unknown—no longer controls us. His perfect love frees us, creating space in our hearts to truly love others. And when we live in this love, we’re walking in obedience to God’s Word. Fear often closes us off, making us less loving and more controlling. But 1 John 4:20-21 reminds us we cannot claim to love Christ while harboring hate or fear—it’s a contradiction. Fear builds walls; love tears them down. Here’s the challenge: Let Christ’s perfect love free you from fear so His love can flow through you to others. As fear diminishes, love grows—and that’s the ripple effect of living in God’s truth. Will you trust Him to transform your heart today?
· Trust in His Love: Remember this truth: Nothing—absolutely nothing—can separate us from God’s love (Romans 8:38-39). Isn’t that incredible? Not only does God love us, but His very nature—love itself—lives within us. Because He is in us, His love is alive in us! But be warned: the enemy of our soul will do everything to distract and deceive us. His goal is to replace the certainty of God’s love with fear and lies, making us feel unworthy, uncertain, and disconnected. If we’re not careful, these lies can lead us into disobedience and despair. That’s why we must be intentional in trusting God’s promises and living in His truth. Fear has no power over us when we anchor ourselves in His Word. As Isaiah 41:10 reminds us, “Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, or I am your God.” And Psalm 56:3–4 offers this reassurance: “When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.” Choose to walk in God’s love and freedom today, holding tightly to His unshakable promises. Fear has no hold when God’s love fills your heart.
Sound Mind

A sound mind, or self-discipline, allows us to think clearly and act wisely. Fear often attacks our thoughts, but God’s Word equips us to remain steadfast by:
Renew Your Mind: Be transformed by the renewing of your mind (Romans 12:2). If you have not realized this before, pay attention…….fear loves to mess with our minds. It’s one of the first areas that fear targets, and it can overwhelm us if we’re not careful. Fear can paralyze us, keeping us from moving forward. We get stuck, unable to act, unable to think clearly. Sometimes, fear does the opposite and throws our minds into overdrive. We start spiraling into all the "what ifs," worrying about worst-case scenarios, or panicking about uncertainty. In those moments, it’s so easy to stop waiting on God—His timing, His leading, and His provision—and instead, we act out of that fear frenzy. Friends, the stark reality is that as humans we are prone to fear. However, the good news is that God’s gift of a sound mind is exactly what we need to counter fear. A sound mind helps us approach challenges with wisdom and clarity. Additionally having a sound mind is about living with a sense of balance, purpose, and self-discipline that keeps us grounded in God’s truth. Your mind is a battle ground, where there is a constant fight to hold your mind captive with fearful thoughts. But you can break free of that stronghold by practicing self-discipline to keep your thoughts and actions aligned with God’s word. Ensuring to renew your mind daily with prayer and speaking God’s word and trusting that He’s got you covered, no matter what.
· Cast Down Fearful Thoughts: Take every thought captive to Christ (2 Corinthians 10:5). Fearful thoughts often masquerade as truths, but they are nothing more than clever lies designed to distract us from God’s purpose and undermine our faith. We’ve all felt overwhelmed by these thoughts at times, but here’s the good news: we can break free from the grip of fear by actively trusting God and confronting those lies with His Word. Start by being aware of the fearful thoughts that creep in, identify the fears stealing your peace and joy, and then boldly confront them with the truth of Scripture. Speak God’s promises over your life, pray fervently, and surrender your fears to Jesus. Remember, “Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God” (Romans 10:17). Fear tries to displace faith, but when you respond with God’s Word, fear loses its power. Faith declares that God is sovereign over all things—even the fear that tries to hold you captive. So, stand firm, speak His truth, and let His peace guard your heart.
· Focus on God’s Promises: Trust in His plan and provision (Jeremiah 29:11). Trusting God’s plan doesn’t mean life will be without challenges—it means believing He’s in control, even when we don’t see the full picture. God’s promise in Jeremiah 29:11 assures us that His plans are always good, designed to give us hope and a future. When fear creeps in, we can turn to His Word, reminding ourselves of His faithfulness. Fear often stems from seeing life through our own limited lens. But when we shift our focus to God, we realize He is greater than anything we face. Yes, it is possible to break free from fear. By trusting that God is your help and strength, you can move forward boldly, knowing you are upheld by the One who never fails. Let His promises be your courage to leave fear behind and walk forward in faith.
3. Confront Fear with Faith

Faith is the antidote to fear. Psalm 56:3-4 declares, “When I am afraid, I will trust in you. In God, whose word I praise…I shall not be afraid.” Having faith in God does not magically remove the existence of our struggles, our fears and anxieties, rather, faith shifts our focus from our circumstances to God’s sovereignty. In essence, faith is a powerful perspective-shifter. We now have the confidence to see God in all His power and glory and be strengthened to confront our fears and break free.
Through the studying of the word of God, declaring the word of God, offering up praise and thanksgiving, reflecting on God’s victories in your live, and praying in the spirit, you are now able to unleash the power of God against the fears that threaten to overwhelm you. I must admit that it took some time for me to buckle down and really study the word of God, to get understanding and revelation, but as I became more familiar with the word and declaring it my faith soared and I became more confident and less fearful.
Be encouraged! You don’t have to be a captive to fear any longer, be reminded with this word in Isaiah 41:10, “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand”.
4. Identify Fear’s Impact and Reject It

When we stop trusting in the Lord Jesus, fear takes over. It crushes our faith, dims our hope, and makes our problems look bigger than the Almighty God who holds all power. Instead of seeing Him as the Way Maker and Miracle Worker, we lean on our own limited strength—and that’s where things go wrong.
Think back to Adam and Eve. Fear became their clothing. What was once pure, and innocent now felt dirty and shameful. They went from being unashamed in God’s presence to hiding in fear (Genesis 3:8-10). That’s what fear does—it twists our perspective, pulling us away from God.
I urge you, my friends, be intentional in your walk with God. Obedience and staying in His presence shield us from the oppression of fear.
Fear is no small thing. It wreaks havoc on every part of our lives, so its best not to be ignorant of the damage that it can do:
It causes anxiety, depression, and despair.
It shatters our ability to trust in God’s promises.
It clouds our judgment, leading to poor choices.
It diminishes God’s power in our eyes.
It opens the door for the enemy to operate in our lives.
It destroys our peace, confidence, and connection with God.
Most tragically, it stops us from doing His will.
The good news is that by identifying how fear manifests in your life, you can take intentional steps to reject it. You can’t fight an enemy and defeat it if you are not aware of some of its strategies, and they may seem like normal things like self-doubt, procrastination or being stagnant and indecisive. This was a very profound revelation for me, I realized I was fearful because I was not aware of what and how the enemy would attack, this made me so fearful. However, once I began to recognize and keep track of these patterns I became deliberate in rejecting those thoughts and behaviors.
You too can recognize the enemy’s schemes and choose to be deliberate and purposeful in rejecting those thoughts and behaviors. Most importantly, remember that you are never alone in this battle, Isaiah 41:13 assures us, “Fear not, I am the one who helps you.”
5. Embrace God’s Presence

Fear thrives in isolation; fear often tightens its grip on our heart and mind especially when we feel alone or disconnected. This in turn amplifies our worries and doubts. However, God’s presence is our haven, our refuge (Psalm 91:1-2). The presence of God is a fortress where we can find peace and protection, it is important to attract the presence of God through prayer, worship, and fellowshipping with other believers to help break the chains of isolation. Engaging in these practices will empower you to step out of fear's shadow and into the light of God’s steadfast love and care that His presence provides.
6. Replace Fear with Trust
Proverbs 3:5-6 instruct us to trust in the Lord with all our hearts and lean not on our understanding. For many of us trust does not come easy, a lot of times it’s hard to believe that we can actually get through this new challenge or overcome this new seemingly insurmountable obstacle, even when we have evidence that God has done it before…….we still won’t fully trust Him! However, it’s a lie that fear conjures up, and when fear whispers lies, this is the time declare your trust in God’s truth, His holy words. Therefore, speak life-giving Scriptures out loud.
There’s power in proclaiming God’s truth over your life while reflecting on His faithfulness. As you continually delve into the scriptures, declare the word of the Lord and remember all the times He has shown up for you, your trust in His ability will definitely grow, I have seen it in my own life. You can totally reject, replace and break free because you trust God and have fully surrendered to His will, allowing God to guide you in His perfect timing.
7. Be Intentional in Your Walk
Fear doesn’t vanish on its own; James 1:14 warns against being drawn away by our own desires, so we must stay rooted in Christ to remain victorious. Your relationship with Christ Jesus will always be tested with fear, doubts and anxieties. However, you can strengthen your walk with your Savior by engaging with others of like-minded faith who will hold you accountable, support you and encourage you. Also, as you spend quality time in prayer and study of the scriptures your mind will be renewed and be more aligned with God’s will and purpose for your life. These are key strategies that will keep you focused on what God has given you for life and godliness rather than be drawn away and held captive by fear.

Conclusion: Discard the Spirit of Fear
God has given us power, love, and a sound mind. Fear is a cloak we were never meant to wear. Let’s intentionally discard it and embrace the abundant life God has for us.
As Isaiah 41:10 reminds us: “Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
Friends, I encourage you to use this post as a launching pad to begin the process of breaking free from fear.
Evaluate the fear factors in your life and work on the areas needed, it may be the need to build up your prayer life, exercise your faith, or learn to trust God and take Him at His word. You may need to be more intentional in embracing the presence of the Lord so that you can confront fear and reject its influence in your life. The goal is for you to boldly declare your freedom from fear, and with God’s help be victorious in the life He intended for us all - walking in power, love, and of a sound mind.
