Trust is foundational to every relationship, especially when it comes to our relationship with God. But what does it truly mean to trust God, and how can we intentionally build this trust? In my early years as a believer, I often heard the phrase 'trust God, He will take you through.' Most times, I would nod and say yes, I am trusting God in all things, but deep down, I was unsure what it meant.
I would often ask myself how I would know I trusted God and how could that trust be demonstrated. As I continued my walk with Christ, I was determined to understand the true essence of trusting God. Not just saying the words but demonstrating that I trusted Him with everything that had to do with my life. As I matured and grew as a believer, I learned deep and lasting lessons about trusting God. I gained and applied invaluable insights through prayer, bible study, the preaching of sound biblical principles, personal experiences, and personal study of the lives of biblical characters who demonstrated trust in the Sovereign God, the Lord Jesus Christ.
Being armed with this knowledge and experience, I am happy to share with you what I have learned during my journey of trusting God, so I invite you to dive right into this insightful and instructive post. Here, you will understand the essence of trust, its benefits, and how you can make it a practical, daily choice in your walk with Christ.

What Is Trust?
Trust is more than just a feeling - it’s an action. According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, trust is "an assured reliance on the character, ability, strength, or truth of someone or something." Hence , to trust God means we rely fully on His ability to be faithful, dependable, and truthful. His promises are not just words; they are reliable, and He will always keep them.
In Numbers 23:19, the Word assures us, “God is not man, that He should lie, or a son of man, that He should change His mind." He does what He says He will do. As we grow in our knowledge of Him, our trust in His character and faithfulness deepens. To trust God is to know Him, to know His nature – faithful, reliable, dependable, and truthful (Numbers 23:19, Titus 1:2; Hebrews 6:18).
How Do You Build Trust in God?

Trust in God is developed over time through consistent experiences with His faithfulness. Much like any relationship, it takes time, communication, and intentionality. Trusting God is not a one-time decision but a continual choice that you make each day. As you spend time in God’s Word, praying and reflecting on His actions throughout history, you come to know His character. God’s word is truth, the ‘ultimate truth’….and therefore trust comes from repeated experiences with truth.
Scripture Support:
“Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth.” (John 17:17)
“Jesus answered, 'I am the way and the truth and the life.'” (John 14:6)
“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” (Psalm 119:105)
This continued connection and knowledge of God’s character through His word will most assuredly build your confidence in Him. The more you get to know Him, the more you realize that He is trustworthy, dependable, and faithful to His promises, and that builds trust.
Why Trusting God is Crucial for Our Faith
1. Trusting God is foundational to your relationship with Him and your salvation. Without trust, you will not experience the fullness of His grace and goodness. Proverbs 3:5-6 explains the importance of fully relying on God's guidance and not on our own understanding, thereby making trust in God a central pillar of your faith.
2. Our trust deepens as we grow in the knowledge of who God is, His promises, and His past actions. This is why we must commit ourselves to studying the Bible and reflecting on His faithfulness. As seen in Psalm 9:10 “Those who know your name trust in you, for you, O Lord, do not abandon those who search for you.”
3. Trust is an active word. It’s not merely a belief; it is demonstrated in how we live. Our actions must reflect the trust we place in God. When we trust Him, we act in faith, obeying His guidance even when we can’t see the full picture. Proverbs 3:5-6 posits that trust is actively demonstrated through our choices and actions, aligning our will with God's will.

The Benefits and Blessings of Trusting God
This has been my experience, and it would be remiss of me not to share the benefits and blessings that you, too, can experience when you trust God.
1. You will be given the needed guidance and direction because you rely on Him, as God promises to guide and lead all those who trust Him and not in their knowledge and strength (Proverbs 3:5-6).
2. Your relationship with God will grow to another level because you are trusting God in all your ways, looking only to him for every provision for every decision (Psalm 40:4).
3. You will always be protected and delivered from harm, even when you experience setbacks, challenges, and roadblocks intended to harm you. He will keep you safe, and you will not be crushed nor destroyed (Psalm 91:2; Psalm 9:9; Isaiah 12:2).

4. Your strength will be renewed, trusting Him, especially in weary times, will give your spirits a lift beyond what you could ever imagine (Isaiah 40:31).
5. You will experience a level of peace that is unmatched, and therefore, you can rest in the security of His promises that they will come to pass (Isaiah 26:3)
6. You can rest assured that when you trust God and take delight in His presence, your every need will be provided for. Always to the measure you need and always at the right time, for He is faithful (Psalm 37: 3-5).
Where NOT to Place Your Trust
The Bible also warns us against placing our trust in the wrong things. We are urged not to trust in material wealth, our own strength, or anything that competes with our trust in God.
Scripture Support:
“Those who trust in their riches will fall, but the righteous will thrive like a green leaf.” (Proverbs 11:28)
“Cursed is the one who trusts in man, who depends on flesh for his strength and whose heart turns away from the LORD.” (Jeremiah 17:5-6)
This is your lot, the portion I have decreed for you,”declares the Lord,“because you have forgotten me and trusted in false gods. I will pull up your skirts over your face that your shame may be seen (Jeremiah 13 v 25-26).
But you have planted wickedness, you have reaped evil, you have eaten the fruit of deception. Because you have depended or trusted on your own strength and on your many warriors, the roar of battle will rise against your people, so that all your fortresses will be devastated (Hosea 10 v 13-14).
Placing trust in anything other than God leads to disappointment, shame, bad decisions, deception, and defeat. God alone is trustworthy, and when we lean on Him, we thrive.
Real-Life Examples of Trusting God

Throughout Scripture, we see powerful examples of individuals who placed their trust in God and experienced incredible results. Let’s take a look at just a few:
1. David: Trusting God for Protection and Victory
David's trust in God was unwavering. Before facing Goliath, he recalled how God had delivered him from the lion and the bear. In 1 Samuel 17:37, David boldly declared, “The LORD who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.” David’s trust led to victory because he believed in God’s faithfulness.
2. Elijah: Trusting God for Provision
When famine struck the land, Elijah trusted God to provide. In 1 Kings 17:14-16, the prophet assured the widow that her flour and oil would not run out. As they trusted, they saw God’s miraculous provision. Trusting God means relying on Him to meet our needs, even in the hardest times.
3. Peter: Trusting God to Walk on Water
In Matthew 14:29-31, Peter trusted Jesus enough to step out of the boat and walk on water. Though his faith wavered when he saw the wind, his initial step was an act of complete trust in God’s power. When we trust God, we step out in faith, even when the situation seems impossible.
4. Abraham: Trusting God in the Face of Delays
Abraham’s journey of trust provides one of the most profound examples. Despite the long wait for the promised child, Abraham continued to trust God. Even when he and Sarah tried to “help” God by taking matters into their own hands (Genesis 16), God’s plan was never thwarted. At age 99, Abraham’s trust was rewarded when God fulfilled His promise, giving him a son, Isaac.
Key Takeaway: Trusting God may take time, but His promises are always fulfilled in His perfect timing. “Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding.” (Proverbs 3:5-6).
Practical Steps to Trusting God More in 2025

So, how can we apply this to our lives in the year 2025? Here are some practical steps to intentionally trust God:
1. Spend Time in His Word: Get to know God better through daily Bible reading and prayer. The more we understand His character, the easier it becomes to trust Him.
2. Obey His Commands: Trust is demonstrated through obedience. When God speaks, we act - trusting that His way is always the best.
3. Remind Yourself of His Faithfulness: Keep a journal of answered prayers and moments when God has shown up in your life. Reflecting on His past faithfulness helps build future trust.
4. Focus on Him, Not Your Circumstances: Like Peter walking on the water, keep your eyes fixed on Jesus. In moments of doubt, remember His power and reliability.
Final Thoughts

Although we are already almost two months into the new year of 2025, there is no time like the present to start this journey of trusting God. I challenge you to make placing your trust in God a daily choice and a priority action. Trust is not just a feeling - it’s a decision we make every day. And as you begin to let go of your way and trust in Him, your Lord and Savior, you will experience His peace, provision, and presence like never before. Remember, God is faithful, and His timing is perfect. Trust Him, and you will see His promises come to fruition in your life.
"Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding." (Proverbs 3:5). May 2025 be a year filled with trust, peace, and the joy of walking closely with God.
